The cable car question

Ba Na Hills: one cable car, four ways to ride it.

The Golden Bridge sits at 1,400 metres and everything on that mountain hangs off the same cable-car system. What changes is who drives you to the station, whether lunch is included, and how early you clear the gate.

The map in your head

Da Nang is the base. Hoi An, Hue and the Cham towers are the days out.

A resort in the clouds at 1,400 metres, an old town lit by lanterns an hour south, an imperial citadel over the pass, brick towers in a jungle valley, and the limestone stacks standing in the sand at My Khe.

An hour south

Hoi An after dark is why half of Da Nang books a driver.

The old town bars its lanes to traffic in the evening, the lanterns come on along the Thu Bon and the sampans push out carrying candles. Almost every run down here leaves Da Nang after lunch, takes the Marble Mountains on the way, and stays for the lights.

What Da Nang charges

What a day out of Da Nang actually costs.

Every tour on the site, grouped by what you pay. Vietnam is cheap and the ladder shows it: a morning on the Marble Mountains costs less than lunch does at home.

Under $50

Cave mornings, night-market walks, cooking classes and the cable-car ticket on its own.

$50–150

The full days out: Ba Na with a buffet, Hue over the pass, My Son and the boat back down the river.

$150 and up

A car and driver for the whole day, chartered boats to Cham Island, and the private runs down the coast.

Only here

Three things that only happen on this stretch of coast.

Beaches and old towns turn up all over Vietnam. A bridge carried by two stone hands, a cave staged as the underworld, and a round woven boat that spins on purpose do not.

Held up by hands

The Golden Bridge

A 150-metre walkway curves out of the hillside at Ba Na, apparently carried by two enormous weathered stone hands, and it opened in 2018 to a level of attention nobody planned for. Getting there means one of the longest non-stop cable-car runs in the world, up through jungle and cloud to a hilltop the French built a hill station on a century ago. The bridge is busiest late morning; the mountain is often above the weather when the city below is grey.

Under Marble Mountain

Am Phu Cave

Inside Thuy Son, the largest of the five Marble Mountains, a staircase drops into a cave the Vietnamese call Am Phu, the hell cave. Carved scenes of judgement and punishment line the lower chamber in half-light; a second, harder scramble climbs towards a bright opening at the top. It is a genuinely dark, genuinely steep cave, and it sits ten minutes from a beach full of sun loungers.

In the coconut water palms

The Basket Boats

Round woven coracles, thung chai, are working fishing boats along this coast, and in the water-coconut channels at Cam Thanh outside Hoi An they have become the afternoon everyone remembers. You get paddled through the palms, shown how a crab trap and a cast net actually work, and then somebody spins a boat on its axis to music until the whole channel is applauding.

These sell out from home

Four Da Nang bookings that will not wait.

Most of this coast can be arranged over breakfast on the day. These four run on cable-car hours, sea conditions and minibuses that leave once.

  1. 01Full Day Golden Bridge and Ba Na Hills Small Group TourEverything on Ba Na runs off one cable-car system with a fixed last car down, so a late start costs you the top of the mountain.
  2. 02Cham Island Snorkeling Daily Group Tour, Sunbathing, nice beachesThe crossing is called off whenever the sea gets up, and it closes for long stretches of the wet season. Put it early in the trip so a lost day can be moved.
  3. 03Hue Imperial Day Trip, Hai Van Pass Train, & LunchHue is three hours each way over the Hai Van Pass, and the small-group runs leave once, early. There is no afternoon option.
  4. 045 Dishes Cooking Class with Market Trip in Da NangA class takes a fixed number of seats and shops for them at the morning market, so the same-day answer is usually no.
Rain and heat

Da Nang takes most of its year of rain between September and December.

The wet months arrive in autumn and can shut the boats for days at a time. May to August does the opposite and turns the middle of the day into something to sit out. Both have the same answer: a kitchen, a table, a treatment room.
